A Corporate Blue LawBlue Law. Ever heard of it? No, it’s not a variation on going green or some sort of save the ocean effort. It’s actually an age old traditional belief that Sunday be set aside as a day of rest. No work, no business, no commitments except for time spent in quiet reflection and in the company of friends and family. (We promise this is strictly an agnostic blog, so keep reading!) It’s such a strange and foreign practice to us, especially in the 24/7/365 all mobile, all the time culture we live in. But believe it or not, there are still some cultures (and even a couple of American towns) that still embrace this philosophy. At PoP we spend a lot of time talking about connecting and engaging. This is truly our raison d’être. But secular, non-secular – we don’t care – we find this fascinating. It’s about consciously and fully embracing the action of disconnecting in one place (work) in order to deeply connect in another (life). And it is in no way easy. For example, there are businesses and companies that must be open on Sundays (think hospitals, transportation and retail) and service organizations that run 24/7 regardless. But despite that fact, are there still ways we can disconnect to recharge? We think so. In fact, we think that people, who can shut out distractions and sit and think and come up with their own ideas, will come out on top.
- Disconnect A Little….
Be in the moment. If you’re talking with a co-worker or client, set your phone down, shut your laptop and focus on the person or activity in front of you. It will force you to actively listen instead of listening with your head bent over your phone. Do this often enough and you’ll learn more and be much more efficient.
- Disconnect A Little More….
Have a disconnect time each day. It’s like setting office hours if you’re a professor — you set the times that work best for you, and you can even let people know about these times. Tell people your policy, so they know you won’t be available for email or texting. And use this time to create. Ironically, companies that foster an engaged and connected culture have a much easier time getting their teams on board with this. We’re guessing it’s because these people already feel listened to and heard, so there isn’t the “fear of missing out.”
- Going Off the Grid….
Your own “blue law.” We say that it’s a must to take a day or two (think weekend) and leave your work behind. Draw a line in the sand. And while not always feasible for everyone, think about occasionally going “off the grid,” and leaving technology behind. Who knows, you might just feel better, sleep better and live better.
