Engaging The “Corporate Brain”
It is common knowledge that we use roughly ten percent of our brains, but wouldn’t it be great if we could access the whole thing
? In business, it is very similar. Almost all corporate decisions are made exclusively by management, which makes up about ten percent of the organization. In essence, this is equivalent to using just a small portion of the “corporate brain.”
If we had the capacity to access the entirety of our brains, we would do it in a heartbeat. So why would we not do the same for our company?
We hire all of these employees for a specific purpose and it seems shortsighted that they are not tapping into their fullest potential
. When you only let management make all the decisions, it is like trying to play chess with half of your pieces missing. Sure, it could work, but it would be much more productive and successful if you had all of them. We are not suggesting management by committee or even mob rule, but there is something to be said for tapping into the power of the collective to uncover ideas from unexpected sources, or even more importantly, create better engagement.
We’ve talked before about the importance of fully engaging each and every employee
to their full potential. People are more likely to work harder and invest in something if they feel that they’re apart of the design and development stage. It provides a much-needed sense of accomplishment and more personal interest than when they are spoon-fed other peoples’ ideas. It helps uncover critical success factors along the way as well.
A few things can be done to fully engage the whole corporate brain.
- Focus on collaboration
- Ask for the group’s opinions before you give your own
- Have the group comment and vote on everybody else’s idea
- Use the group the come up with the best way to implement that idea
The ultimate goal is not to rely on mob rule but to uncover the best idea from unlikely sources. The idea is to fully engage the group collective.
