What is Kaizen and Why You Need It

Do you know what Kaizen is? Have you heard it referred to in the corporate world? It’s a well-established and well-accepted business philosophy that applies to companies of every size and in every industry. It was established in Japan in 1986, and it defines a critical element to organizational success. What is Kaizen

Kaizen has guidelines regarding the areas of improvement that fall within its philosophy. Why It’s Important

Now that we’ve established what Kaizen is, it’s time to talk about why it’s important. It’s actually quite critical for organizations to adopt this business philosophy. While it’s a simple concept, it tackles some of the most challenging problems that can arise in any given company. The standards that are involved in the Kaizen school of thought are great individual instances of why it’s necessary for your company. For example, when you focus on good processes, your company will yield the best possible results from those procedures. This will make you more competitive and productive, and your costs will be as low as you can get them. This is critical as you grow and scale within your organization. Additionally, speaking with data and managing by facts is vital to the success of your organization. Looking at successes and failures through an objective lens will make sure your decisions are based on reality and not influenced by emotion. Relying on data to make decisions is the best way to get to the heart of what’s actually happening in your company. This plays nicely into the next standard established within Kaizen, which is to take action in regards to the root cause of a problem. Once you find out what the data is telling you, taking the time to correctly address it is critical to organizational success. Working as a team and making everyone accountable is the final key element of Kaizen, and a strong reason why you should implement the methodology into your business. It’s everyone’s responsibility to tell the truth about what’s happening (or not happening) in your organization, and by adopting this type of mindset you enable your employees to share their knowledge and effectively direct your initiatives towards success and away from failure.
